Excerpt from The Capture and Execution of John Brown a Tale of Martyrdom
Six o'clock, Monday morning, October 17, 1859, was one of the most thrilling moments of my life.
I was a boy at the time, learning the watch-maker's trade at Charlestown, Jefferson County, Virginia. At that hour, on that historic day, I was awakened by the long roll of drums and the strident notes of fifes calling "Assembly!" Hastily dressing myself, I rushed to the street and the first person I encountered was John Moore, sheriff of the county, who was hurriedly saddling his horse and whose countenance betrayed great agitation. Looking down the street in the direction of the court house, I discerned two companies of the home militia, the Botts Grays, and what was popularly known as "Captain Rowens Company," all in uniform and assembling amid scenes of the greatest confusion and excitement. Turning to Sheriff Moore as he was preparing to mount his horse I asked him the reason for all this tumult and display of force.
