In these days when mystical theosophy so much prevails amongst a certain set of people - whether under the name of Esoteric Buddhism or any other - it is interesting to consider what was the tendency of the same sort of teaching at the end of last century. The minds of men were then more or less divided between transcendentalism and the doctrines of Voltaire. Magicians and astrologers astonished the multitude with their marvellous deeds, and some of them were even recognised as adepts by several of the greatest savants of the time.
