The Major had been a great editor in the glorious days when the editor wrote one epoch-making editorial early in the week and then wandered among the meeting places of men to hear it talked about. Thus had come a wide circle of acquaintances and the call of his party and his election to Congress, where he served with enough success to perpetuate himself as an officeholder for many years afterwards.
