Instead Of the superintendent on one side and scholars on the other, as is the usual custom in reading the responsive service, it will be found a pleasant change to make two divisions Of the school, and let them take the service between them. It is more apt to engage the attention of the whole school, and adds interest to the reading.

The fortieth service is designed to be used at a funeral, as a part of the services of the occasion. If possible, let some of the members of the school, selected with reference to the age Of the deceased, be present, and read the service responsively with the minister. This will be found a peculiarly ten der and appropriate part Of the service, to which, also, may be added singing by the scholars. NO funeral prayer is here inserted - all utterance SO personal and conditioned by a variety Of circum stances, being best left to the person conducting the service and to the promptings Of the hour.
