Excerpt from The Romance of the Men of Devon

Every Devonian is familiar with the poet's lines: -

'Twas ever the way with the good Queen Bess,
Who ruled as well as a mortal can,
When she was stogged, and the country in a mess,
To send for a Devonshire man.

The quotation is entitled to a place of honour in the Preface because it suggested the book; but the scope of the book is nevertheless somewhat larger than the use of the quatrain might indicate. A larger group of Devonians attained eminence in the Elizabethan age than at any other period of history; but at no epoch of which adequate records have been preserved do we find eminent Devonian names lacking. The county has always been worthily represented in all departments of endeavour: by men of letters as well as by men of action; by Churchmen, by statesmen, by poets, by inventors.
