Excerpt from The Beginner's History of Our Country

In the first place, unlike some primary histories in com mon use, this is not an abridgment of a larger history. To attempt, within the narrow limits of a primary text book, to present all Of'the events of our national life that are commonly considered important from the adult's standpoint, would be to reduce the narrative to little more than a catalogue of names and dates. Moreover, some subjects embraced in our country's history are absolutely beyond the comprehension of an immature mind. To require the young pupil to memorize statements upon such subjects is nothing short of a pedagogical crime.
