Excerpt from The Story of Pullman

At just what time Mr. Pullman first began thinking on the subject of sleeping-cars, he would himself perhaps find it difficult to tell. The problem had been raised by the comple tion of what then were considered long lines of railroad. Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York had thrown out filaments of iron for considerable distances toward the West. To get to the Ohio River at either Wheeling or Pittsburgh, or to get to Lake Erie at Dunkirk or Buffalo, involved a journey of over 400 miles. A journey of 400 miles took as much time as now does one of more than double that distance. The physical fatigue involved was greater than is now incident to a trip from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.
