Excerpt from Notabilities in France and England
The papers upon France were addressed to friends of the writer to those who placed trust in the sincerity of a studious man and an observer. They perceived that any singularity of thought or style, for which he received praise or censure, proceeded not from eccen tricity, or from the peevishness and discontent of an office-hunter, but from the strangeness of events. They cannot suspect him of any romantic claims, or affected severity towards his contemporaries and now that his previsions are realized, his opinions can produce no surprise. The solitary recluse needs little effort to see justly; his View is not disturbed by the turmoil and confusion of party.
