All the persons I meet with are pros perous and happy and yet most of them, including the friends of the government (i. E., of Washington's administration), appear to be much alarmed at a supposed system Of policy tending to subvert the republican government of the country.

Excerpt from The Old Guard, Vol. 7: A Monthly Magazine, Devoted to Literature, Science, and Art, and the Political Principles of 1776& 1860; January, 1869
By the principle of monarchy we may not necessarily mean the government of a king or an emperor. The imperial or despotic principle may be administered in the name of a republic, as the republican principle may be administered in the name of a king. The most ancient kingdoms of Europe were really republics, as we shall show in some future article. The Old Testament Jewish government, though it bears the kingly name, was a simple Commonwealth. In discussing the principle of government, names are of little importance to those who are capable of comprehending the vital elements of civil power, which underlie the different forms of government.
The monarchical or the despotic principle may be called - to use a philosophical expression - the centrifugal government; that is, where all power proceeds from a central point, and leaves the mass of the people without free choice in their rulers and laws. The true republican or democratic form is centripetal in its character, where power springs, not from the centre, but from the circumference, and originates and is held by the people themselves. Monarchy and despotism is centralized power; republicanism or democracy is decentralized power. In proportion as the powers of government are centralized, they approach or tend to monarchy and despotism. In proportion as they are decentralized, they assume the republican or democratic form.
