I have not written a book. At the urgent request of some of our friends, I have collected the letters I wrote to them during the year we were traveling in many lands, and with the help of the quite copious notes which I never failed to record in my diary I have been able to reproduce at least a general idea of where we have been and what we have seen, and a faint glimpse only of the much we have learned.
