This book is a diverse collection of essays exploring the life, scholarly work, and cultural impact of esteemed minister Edward Robinson. Beginning with the author's New England Puritan lineage, the text traces the development of Robinson's religious, social, and academic life from the influence of his farmer father to his travels abroad to his eventual teaching post at Andover Theological Seminary. These essays examine the scholarly breadth of Robinson's endeavors, from his work with Semitic languages to his role as editor of periodicals to his ground-breaking studies of geography. The book also discusses the major themes of Robinson's work: the importance of scientific exploration and a focus on historical accuracy in interpreting the Bible. Robinson is presented as both a pious man of unwavering faith and a meticulous scholar committed to academic rigor and open to new discoveries. The work concludes with a reflection on Robinson's enduring legacy in the field of biblical scholarship and his enduring impact on a more informed and engaged study of religion.

Excerpt from The Life, Writings and Character of Edward Robinson: Read Before the Historical Society
Dr. Edward Robinson, though not able to trace his lineage to the spiritual father of the Plymouth Colony, was of Puritan descent and New England parentage. He was endowed in a high degree with the mental and moral qualities of that penetrating, frugal, laborious, liberty-loving and God-fearing race from which he sprung. His early advantages were slender, but they were all well improved. In Hamilton College he easily stood at the head of a large class in every department of study, though mathematics was at first his chosen pursuit. Devoting himself to the ministry of the Gospel, he soon found that his congenial sphere was in the walks of sacred scholarship rather than in the routine of pastoral life.
