"Of this volume, of about two hundred pages, we cannot well speak too highly. The author remarks, in his preface, that he has been particularly employed in the business for thirty-four years, having conducted all its branches in one of the largest ateliers in Paris, in the British government works, Woolwich, and in the Penn Works, Philadelphia. A large proportion of the work is made up from papers, contributed by the author to different mechanical and scientifical publications, which have been revised for the purpose; but though, to a great extent, the production of a single mind, there appears no effort throughout the body of the work to claim originality for the various receipts and valuable information furnished. On the contrary, this little volume possesses in a high degree a merit quite rare among late mechanical books, that of distinctly stating its authority in each instance." - Appleton's Mechanics' Magazine.
"We are pleased to notice the publication of this little work, which is exceedingly well got up, and reflects, in that respect, credit upon the publisher. It is a compendium of various information valuable to the class of men for whose benefit it is published, and being written by a practical man, who has himself felt the want of a similar work, and who contributes from his own experience, will no doubt be received with favor.
