Excerpt from Chardin and His Times

This little volume needs a few words of explanation, for, properly speaking, it is not a book, as which it appears, at all. It was originally written and delivered as a lecture, in April, at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Nevertheless, I venture to say that it has a "raison d'etre" even in its present form, if only the reader will bear in mind that it is primarily a lecture delivered to an audience of a peculiar complexion.
