So far, therefore, was I fiom endeavouring to keep {lricftly to the title which I firft gave thefe lectures, viz. On H'jfz'ory, that I findied to exceed thofe bounds as much as, with any propriety, I poiiibly Could; and I foon found that, under the head of oéjee'i'r of alfenz'z'on to an nfiorian, or a reader of hit'lory, I could ealily bring the vcry important fubjeét of ge neral policy, or an account of thofe things which principally contribute to render the Great focieties of mankind happy, numerous.
