Despite initial setbacks, he persisted as a writer, producing over a dozen plays, including successful comedies and tragedies. In 1796, Dunlap took a significant step, purchasing a share in the management of the New York theatre, marking the beginning of a new phase in his career. As director, he played a crucial role in shaping the theatrical landscape, nurturing both actors and playwrights like Charles Brockden Brown. Dunlap's contributions to American culture are vast. His plays reflect the social and political climate of his time, while his historical writings on art and theatre became invaluable records of those fields' early development in the United States. Through his efforts, he helped lay the foundation for a thriving American stage and artistic community, solidifying his place as a pioneer in the history of American culture.
