The important relation which the Battle of Bunker Hill bears to the whole war of the American Revolution, requires a brief statement of the causes that led to that memorable conflict. Proposals. in successive British Parliaments, for the taxation of the American colonists, without allowing them a representation in those Parliaments, first opened the issue of strife. That there were those, especially in the New England colonies, who had for some time previous cherished a lurking spirit of opposition to any acts of sovereignty which Great Britain might here attempt to exercise, may not be denied.
