The first essay, it is hoped, may be of service to those of the younger clergy who may desire to place on their book-shelves some of the more important works which help to the elucidation of the history, structure, and meaning of the prayer-book.

The opportunity may be taken here for correcting two errors in me Worémamlzip of tile prayer-book, which were not discovered till after the appearance of the second edition. At p. 132 the collect for the first Sunday after Easter is wrongly attributed to Bishop Cosin it is really the old Collect for Tuesday in Easter week, transferred in 1662 to the next Sunday. At p. 134 it is stated that before 1661 the Collect for Easter Day was used through the whole of Easter week, while, in fact, Easter Tuesday had its own proper collect.
