Professor Newcomb says in the Preface to his Algebra that all mathematical conceptions require time to become engrafted upon the mind, and the more time, the more their abstruseness. And again in the same work, one well known principle underly ing the acquisition of all knowledge is that an idea cannot be fully grasped by the youthful mind, unless it is presented in some concrete form. Whenever possible an abstract idea must be em bodied in some visible representation.
