Excerpt from Man and His Buildings
History is valuable in so far as it enlarges and deepens our knowledge of the spirit of man. Countless numbers of men in the past have made their contributions towards the great enterprise Of mankind, the quest of the knowledge of God. In studying History, these efforts of man's spirit are laid open to the sympathetic enquirer, and we are enabled to fortify and direct our efforts by theirs.

Excerpt from Man and His Buildings
This book is largely an expansion of an essay on The Influence on Architecture of the Condition of the Worker, which gained the Silver Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1914. That essay in its turn was largely inspired by Ruskin's great chapter in The Stones of Venice on "The Nature of Gothic" and is an attempt to apply the principles enunciated there more widely. The subject has been treated most illuminatingly by Morris, Choisy, Viollet-le-Duc, Lethaby and others. If this book sends its readers to theirs much of its purpose will be accomplished. The writer abhors dogmatism and distrusts wide generalizations: this book - because it is small and its subject huge - is full of both. But possibly to lengthen it by introducing copious footnotes, saving clauses and qualifications would be to bring in a remedy worse than the disease.
