The translator presents the following Essay to the British public, in the full persuasion, that he is thereby conferring upon them at once a benefit and a gratification: a benefit, inasmuch as it treats of subjects of leading and vital importance at the present epoch; and a gratification, from the very talented and superior manner in which those subjects are discussed. Professor A. Vinet, is already well known in this country as an author, and is duly appreciated by those persons whose thorough acquaintance with the French language, renders them competent judges of his works; by many of whom, a strong desire has been expressed to see this Essay in an English dress.
