Destroyer of hares, worked out his programme. His dogs were never by him. One of them might be seen trotting along the off-side of a hedge, and the other inspecting minutely the interior organisation of some stray bushes in the open while their master, fully a hundred yards away from them, was walking quite unconcernedly, just as if beating the field on his own hook. Suddenly one of the dogs would spring a hare. If puss came within range the sportsman tried to bundle her over; if not, he would stand by and let the dogs work up to the hare, kill her, and.

As to the dogs the professional shooters use, they are of no particular breed. In fact it seems that any kind of dog will do for them, provided they have sufficient nose to lead them up to game. They don't care whether they point, stand, crouch, or run in; but by dint of killing a lot of game to them, and enforcing orders, the men come to such a thorough understanding with their animals that lucky is the game that escapes them both. Of course their dogs are thoroughly well broken to retrieve any distance, by land or water, whatever may be their other qualifications. Those chasseurs de profession who live in a hare country, have their dogs generally high on legs, and of a breed but faintly traceable to any peculiar race. Some look like harriers, some like sheep-dogs, some like half-bred setters and lurchers; but they are one and all swift and courageous. Many hares are caught by these dogs and brought to their masters, even if the hares have not been fired at.
