Napoleon Buonaparte was born at Ajaccio, in Corsica, on the 5th February 1768. The Duke of Wellington was born in the year after, which Napoleon subsequently assumed as that of his nativity, in order to constitute himself a French citizen. "Providence," said Louis XVIII., "owed us that counterpoise." His family, though noble, had not been distinguished, and had suffered severely from misfortune. He was too great a man to attempt to derive distinction from any adventitious advantages which did not really belong to him, and could afford to discard all the lustre of patrician descent.
