The few -definitions and canons which occur through the Essay, and which are marked with inverted commas, are given from my notes of the lectures. They are, I believe, substantially correct but as the notes are in many places brief and im perfect, I cannot vouch for their verbal accuracy. The requirements originally prescribed for the Essay are reprinted with it, as they to some extent explain the form which it assumed.
