Excerpt from Tale of a Tub: Written for the Universal Improvement of Mankind; To Which Is Added, an Account of a Battle Between the Ancient and Modern Books in St. James's Library; With the Author's Apology; And Explanatory Notes

The Tale of a Tub is snort of Hudibras in prose, but quite an original; and has' all the merits of Rabelais, without any of his weak-s nesses. This is throughout the whole a mighty fund of good sense, a strong glow of true wit and masculine satire, accompanied with a kind of humour so singularly pleasant, that no cynic can avoid smiling who reads it.
