Still, I trust it will be found that some portions of the work are new, and that, though I have not scrupled to make use of any facts of value within my reach, these have not been adopted without careful examina tion, and their points of connection with the general subject realised. I have done my best also, wherever I have borrowed any one's peculiar property or the special form of an idea, to acknowledge my indebted ness. That I have succeeded in doing this in all cases I dare not hope.
