"The kindly-earnest, brave, foreseeing man---

Sagacious, patient, dreading praise, not blame---

New birth of our new soil, the first American.

But does not this ascribed pre-eminence conflict with the well-known epithet which crowns George Washington as "first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen?"

No: - In the sense intended by the poet, it is true that, as a new birth of the new soil of this Republic, Lincoln was its most typical production. He was "the first American" as embodying most fully the peculiar elements of the new nation of the western world.

For it should be remembered that Washington was not an American in the modern sense of the term.
