Excerpt from Alternating and Interrupted Electric Currents: Being Based Upon Three Lectures Delivered to the Members of the Royal Institution

The present book is the outcome of a course of three lectures delivered before the Royal Institution of Great Britain in 1895. The verbatim report of these has been revised and corrected, and forms the substance of the book. The lectures were primarily intended for an intelligent audience, but one not well versed in electrical science; hence, technicalities have, in general, been avoided, and the colloquial form of expression has been retained in the book. The attention of telegraphists may, however, be drawn to the mechanical torsion model of a sub marine cable - described in the first and second lectures - as illustrating in a novel and remarkably accurate manner the various phenomena observed in working with an actual cable. It is believed, too, that many of the other mechanical analogies described, which formed a chief feature of the course, will be found of interest to others besides.

My special thanks are due to Mr. H. E. Mitchell for his assistance in preparing these lectures for the press.
