For example; it is shown in elementary geometry that the difference between the area of any circle and the area of the inscribed or circumscribed regular polygon can be made as small as we please by increasing the number of sides of the polygon, and this difference evidently can never become absolutely zero. The area of a circle is then the limit of the area of the regular inscribed or circumscribed polygon as the number of sides of the polygon is indefinitely increased.
