Excerpt from Poems and Sonnets
Gianetta.
"Thrice hast thou met me in the secret hour,
Calling my name, and yet thyself unknown;
Thrice hath the dayspring's love-disturbing power
Crept through the night, and found us all alone;
And many times (thyself canst count them best)
Upon thy lips my passion hath been pressed.
"Yet dost thou, like some deity of old,
Whose form was wrapped in bright celestial mist,
Still shroud thyself; mine eyes may scarce behold
Even the lips which I so oft have kissed.
Conceal thyself no longer; let me see
At last the face of my divinity."
As rush the tides when Autumn winds are high,
So rushed the crimson to her listening brow;
As they retire and leave the sands all dry,
So fled that blush, and left her cheek like snow;
Then love cast out the fear that held her dumb, -
"I will not doubt," she said; "the time is come."
