Upbringing in a Russian family is the centerpiece of the book. The Russian family is analyzed in the context of the genus, nation, society and the state. The Russian family is seen developing in a certain natural and geographical setting, internalizing, keeping and creating values of upbringing. Russian traditional values of upbringing are seen as formed since the times of Ancient Slav Rus' (the VIIIth century) up to 1861. Challenges for family upbringing in the XIXth and XXth centuries are reviewed and successful responses to these challenges by social institutions: the state, religion and pedagogical science and public pedagogical movement are described.
