John Pride , with his wife Conchita, had returned to England from the Philippines to sort out his late father's estate, but when they arrive at the manor house, the staff are running riot. On their return to the Philippines John invests in abaca and sugar plantations and buys into warehousing and shipping. However, World War One comes along and it turns their world upside down. After the war they rebuild their lives, until the news arrives that the Second World War is coming to their doorstep.
