The study investigates the ways in which the treatises of the Bel Canto Master Teachers, Tosi, Mancini, Manfredini, etc. and nineteenth century pedagogue Manuel Garcia II served as a foundation for twentieth century voice teacher and author Cornelius Reid's (1911-2008) vocal training techniques. Biography, summary of Reid's Functional Voice Training, historical survey/comparison of divergent views concerning vocal registration, breath management, resonance, and Reid's incorporation of contemporary views on laryngeal function (via Sandberg, Van den Berg, Wyke, etc) into his techniques are the primary chapters. Appendices include listing of successful students over the course of Reid's 66 year teaching career and a transcript of an interview conducted by the author with Reid on July 26, 2007.
