" Valant" has subsequently been used by the German poets of the 13th and 14th century, as a common appellation for the Devil, f. i. Nibelungen, v. 5589; Wigalois, v. 3994, 6976; Gudrun, v. 67:2. It has also been used with the fem. affix " 'valandinne," or "'valendinne," for the bad tempered ladies of yore, f. i. Nib. v. 7016, 960-I; Gudrun, 2518, 2951. ' P. 193. " The northern artist," may perhaps allude to T ischbein from Eutin. P. 194. " How to manage," for "how to lead," alluding to the name of lllusaget. " The Crane." This allusion to Herder may have tW0 reasons.
