Not illustrated. 1883 Excerpt: ...importance as the marriage of a son or daughter must be left to the parents and the go-between employed by them for carrying out the transaction. Among the many gentlemen of wealth and position whom hi regarded as his intimate friends was a merchant carrying on an extensive trade in silk, and owning, among other premises, the famous shop bearing the style Sdm-wo in Tai-pat-po. This establishment contained a vast assortment of shawls, handkerchiefs, scarves, and dresses of various kinds of silk, many of which were exceedingly costly on account of the wonderful embroidery-work upon them. Some were covered with flowers, others with butterflies, birds, and different kinds of creatures or plants. The owner of this business boasted the name of Ma, for it must be understood that the real name of the owner does not appear on his shop, but a sign takes the p.ace of the cognomen just as in the case of our hotels, and formerly our shops as well. Ma's private residence was in the western suburbs of the city, where, indeed, a great number of the gentry and wealthy merchants had built for themselves handsome places of abode, in which their families resided continually; while the paterfamilias was in the city during the day, and returned home at night upon the business being closed. The family which had grown up around the hearth of the celebrated silk-mercer was a somewhat extensive one, and Ma had prided himself in the good matches he had made for so many as had already arrived at a marriageable age. But he had still a son at home who was pursuing his classical studies, with a view to taking his degree, and entering the service of the government. He was still young, but as matches in China are frequently arranged for children who are yet in their teens, and even earlier...
