They were more than heroes; they were patriotic citizen-soldiers, who left the plough at the sound of the war-whoop, prepared themselves for battle; and having dispatched, or driven off tjieir enemies, returned again to the labors of the field with religious gratitude. They claimed no laurel, neither demanded they any ovation, that they had done their country some service, was enough for them. De Witt Cunton was born in March, 1769, in Orange County, State of New-York. He was the son of James Clinton, a patriot, and soldier of the revolution. He graduated at Columbia College, in 17Rl, and immediately commenced the study of law, in the city of New-York. After having obtained admission to the bar, ami practising a short time, he was taken into the office of his uncle, Governor Clinton, a9 his aid and secretary. He now plunged at once into politics, it being then a time of great political excitement. In 1793, he was chosen a member of the Senate of the State of New-York. In this body, young as he was, he soon became n leader. In 1302, Mr. Clinton was appointed a Senator of the United States, from the State of New-York, to supply a vacancy, occasioned by the resignation of General Armstrong. He held this office only a few months, but time enough, however, to take part in some important debates, and to show his talents, as a statesman, and an orator. In the fall of 1903, Mr. Clinton was appointed Mayor of the city of NewYork, and succeeded Edward Livingston, who had declined another election. He continued in this office until 1907. During the four years of his raayonlity, ho was nssidious in the discharge of his duties, and zealous in drawing pla...
