Had I not previously proved that baptism is immersion, when the verb is used literally? Must not the verb then, when used figuratively, have a reference to immersion? In determining the meaning of the word in its figurative acceptation, was I to make no use of my resources in proof of its literal meaning? 1 have given the soundest reason, a reason that is altogether incontrovertible, why the verb in the phrase baptism of the Spirit must have a reference to immersion--the reason is that the word literally used has never any other meaning. Instead of taking the thing for granted, I assign a reason for the meaning of the word, in this place, that good sense will never question. Let us examine the foundation, on which my assertion rests, and we shall see that it consists of self-evident truths, or proved facts. First, it is a self-evident truth that the word Bnwrri here is used figuratively. There is no mode in the communication o the Spirit. When mode therefore, is ascribed to the giving of the Spirit, it is a figure. Whatever may be the meaning of the word baptism, the baptism of the Spirit must be a figurative baptism. This is a thing that cannot be doubted by any person, on either side of the question, who is capable of understanding the terms of the expression. Secondly, it is also a self evident truth, that the figurative meaning of a word must be founded on the literal; or more properly speaking, in figurative language, there is no change of the meaning of words at all. To determine, then, the meaning of a word, when taken figuratively, we must refer to its literal one.
