Not illustrated. 1860 Excerpt: ... especially agreed for, the person so offending shall forfeit and pay for every such offense the sum of not less than five dollars and not exceeding fifty dollars, and shall, in addition thereto, pay the expenses of repairing any damage or injury so done; and if any person intrusted with the spanners of the fire plugs shall open the same, on any occasion whatever, except in case of fire, or at the request of a member of the committee or the superintendent, or shall neglect or refuse to shut the same as soon as the fire shall be extinguished, the person so offending shall for every such offense forfeit and pay the sum of five dollars. Sec. IX. The assessor of water rents shall be annually elected by councils on the second Tuesday in January; he shall, before entering upon the discharge of the duties of his office, give bond, with one or more sufficient sureties, in the sum of two thousand dollars, conditioned for their faithful performance; he shall also make and subscribe an oath or affirmation, before the mayor, that he will well and faithfully discharge said duties; he shall act as clerk to the water committee, and shall make return of his assessments, by wards, in one or more books, as the treasurer may direct, annually, on or before the first day in June, and shall, at the same time, furnish to the controller a correct statement of the aggregate assessment of water rents in each ward; the committee shall allow him, as compensation, in addition to his salary, ten per centum on the amount by him collected from new buildings; he shall assess all water rents by the followiug schedule, to the owner or owners of the premises: HATES E O 1 "WATER, REHSTTS.
