Perhaps therefore, as you had not then produced your ingenious argumentation upon this subject, but had reserved it for a future edition of your book; and as I have shewn, now you have produced it, that it has no foundation to support it, but that the statute, like the canon of 1603, "enjoyns subscription to all the articles "without exception " our readers may be apt to place k to the account of your discretion rather than of mine, that I did not undertake to vindicate the legality of this canon in my discourse: and possibly before this time you may wish, that you had been as discrete in the present edition, as you were in the former. But, now I have examined into this matter, I " have "not," you may still say, "defended the legality of "the canon upon the same principles, which I employed "before to prove the general right" of a protestant church to require subscriptions. Very true; I do not argue from the same principles, to prove the legality of a canon of our church, considered as a protestant Church established by civil authority, and to prove, that it has a right, when considered under the single notion of a protestant church, to require its clergy to subscribe to some confession of faith and doctrines.
