Not illustrated.1899 Excerpt: ... wards to Gripsholm castle, where a former king of Sweden, Erik XIV., had long been imprisoned. Here his queen was permitted to join him. At Gripsholm, Gustavus Adolphus offered to abdicate in favor of his eldest son; but the revolutionary leaders, demanded the exclusion from the throne of the whole royal family, and he was at last prevailed upon to write and sign a document of unconditional abdication. In the latter part of 1809 he was brought with his family across the Baltic to Pommerania, from whence he proceeded to Switzerland. Immediately after the arrest of the king his aged uncle, Carl, Duke of Sodermonland, who had been regent and the king's guardian during his minority, and who had distinguished himself as a naval commander, was requested to take charge of the government until a Diet could be convened, and after some hesitation he consented to do so. The change of government was then proclaimed in the usual manner by a herald. When the army of Adlersparre a few days afterwards entered Stockholm, the revolution was already an accomplished fact. When (justavus Adolphus at Gripsholm heard of this entrance of the army into the capital he derisively exclaimed: "This, then, is the great and brilliant movement which tins Western Army has performed!" But it is nevertheless true what Gen. Adlercreutz wrote to Adlersparre: "Without your co-operation 1 scarcely think that anything had been done here." 7.
