And truly, confidering the Inclination which there is in Mankind to fotnething External, and that perhaps reafonably founded on the Conftitution of Human Nature; I believe it will appear, that God's appointing a few ufeful External Rites, and at the fame Time prohibiting the Ufe of all others of Human Invention, is the moft effectual Prclervative againft Superftition that could be imagined. For if nothing of this kind had been fixed by Divine Appointment, Men might, perhaps, not unreafonably have thought that they might devife fome proper Rites of themfelves; and where they would have ftopped after they had once begun, is not indeed eafy to fay. But when it is fuppofed that God hath taken this Work inro His own Hands, it muft be imagin'd that He hath compleated the Defign, efpecially when He has exprefly forbid any'Additions to His Appointment. 1 could wifh the general Pradice of Cbriftians would alJow me to urge this Argument with greater Strength. But though the feveral Parties of Cbrijitans have all of them, perhaps, more or left, incorporated their own Inventions with the Worfhip of God, yet this is but one among numberlefs other Inftances, in which they have forgot the Rules of their Religion; and upon themlelves alone, but not upon their Religion, will the Blame of this be thrown by all impartial Judges, as Jong as thefe Words are to be found in the Gofpel, In vain do tbey worfaip me, teaching for Doctrines tbe Commandments of Men (.z). 6.
