I Profess to give you only notes. Notes are apt to be desultory, as you find mine to be. One may write many of them in a month or two at Rome. I will not trouble you with half that I have taken, brief or prolix, as fatigue or rest, or the passing time, allowed; and in return for such a favor, you will please take them in that batch method which I so often find it convenient to adopt. Of St. Peter's I will say no more than that it answered my expectations. The impression of its grandeur grew upon me as we became familiar with it, and still does, as my memory revisits it. We spent many hours in our visits to the Vatican--I cannot begin to speak of that vast building and its contents. The first time I entered St. Peter's I found it quite solitary, a crowd having just dispersed from witnessing the ceremonies of Ash Wednesday, when the pope scatters ashes on the heads of the cardinals. A poor peasant came in leading his little boy. He approached the statue of St. Peter, knelt reverently before it, crossed himself, repeated a prayer, rose and kissed the toe, and then lifted the child to it, who kissed it also.
