To imprint on the youthful mind a knowledge which the foregoing pages are designed to impart, is the object of the Planifpherical Planetarium to offer, in delineated representation, that idea which the mind should conceive in order to be impressed with a due notion of the Earth's relative motions and situations. To form a just conception in the mind from mere perusal, is with Youth a task of some difficulty, when the object is not of an ordinary nature; and as it too frequently occurs, that an appearance of difficulty in the outset of study, deters the mind from penetrating beyond its surface, it is necessary to allure them to the attainment of knowledge, by familiarizing systems to their juvenile capacities; and as the eye impresses on the mind a more immediate and lasting knowledge ledge than is conveyed by the ear, it is highly" essential to conception, to give a delineated re.« presentation where it can be effected, thereby making description more impressive. As my chief object in the Planetarium, is to describe the motions of the Earth, and the relative situations it bears to the Sun, I have omitted the representation of the exterior Planets, the limits of this plate being too circumscribed to admit their insertion, without materially diminishing the orbit and magnitude of the Earth: and also from the scale so comparatively diminutive to the representation of such vail bodies, it forbids my adherence to relative proportion in their delineation, since the body of our Earth would appear but as a dot, when compared even to the miniature Sun here described; and to preserve such just proportion, would altogether frustrate my desire of representing the Meridional, Parallel, and other artificial Lines, so indispensably ...
