Not illustrated.1766 Excerpt: ... o n A p. xxix ».- - -" 8nn tfjere to gaae conference/ fTT H E king resolves " to have conference" with his parlement; " and some matters arc proper for such a conference only: they may be of so-universall and high a consequence, that they are not proper for any other conference butt between the king and his parlement; as Caesar notes, in his recitall of the customes of Brittaine, that none ought to speak about the afrayres of the commonwealth, butt by the councell And it is testifyed by our auntient author b, in his mirroir of justice, that the king and his companions (as he properly enough stiles the comites) used to meet togither att London, to conferre about the governement of the people of God. And although his language be old (and as some call it) law french, yett his matter is good j that affayres of governement ought to be conferred on in parlement only, and not be the subject of conferences and debates att large j least it come to that whereof Tacitus soeakes % that there were in place who. rather would interpret, than obey the commands of governors:" and my lord of St Albane's faitb « that disputing, excusing, cavilling uppon mandates and directions is a kind of shaking off the yoake, and assay of disobedience; and seditious tumults, and seditious conferences and fames, differ no more butt as brother and sister."
