When his greater labours are over, I trust our plan will be assisted and honoured by the welltried literary and topographical abilities of my friend, Archdeacon Coxe. I still flatter myself that other coadjutors will present themselves as soon as the plan, I have now the honour to propose to my countrymen, shall have been properly digested and considered; and that, at no very distant period, I may have the heartfelt satisfaction of witnessing the progressive success of this laborious undertaking."--Pp. 3-4. The queries appended to the tract closed with the following sentence:--"If I live to see the completion of this proposed undertaking, I shall review it with double satisfaction, as having been suggested by the love I bear towards my county, and being accomplished by the hands of many, instead of one" It was by the late Lord Arundell, the very nobleman just mentioned, that Sir Richard was informed of my taste for our local antiquities; and I have now before me a letter, dated the 13th of July, 1818, addressed by him to my father, on a point of family history, about which he thought I could afford him information. My answer led to further correspondence, till at length, by a letter of the 23d of August following, he proposed that I should collect materials for "the snug little hundred of Underditch, containing only four parishes," adding, "I am naturally anxious to get as forward with South Wiltshire as possible." By the same letter he said, "I hope, when my friend Coxe's heavy labours are at an end, that he will undertake the city of Sarum."
