D. 35, Lucius Vitellius, having been appointed proconsul of: Syria by the emperor Tiberius, went to Jerusalem during the festival of the Passover, and was received with every mark of honor and distinction. As a compliment to the inhabitants for their obedience and respect, he remitted, for that year, the whole duty on the fruit that was exposed to sale. Before he quitted the metropolis, where he staid only three days, he deposed Caiaphas, the highpriest; and having appointed Jonathan, the son of Annas, or Annanus, to the sacred office, he departed for Antioch, the capital of his province. In consequence of a tumult, which took place soon after in Samaria, Pilate acted in the most cruel and arbitrary manner. A wretched fanatic, or impostor, persuaded the Samaritans, that, if they would go to the sacred mount Gerizim, he would direct them to the spot where Moses had formerly buried the consecrated vessels.
