Excerpt: ... like, after his return home of an evening wearied with the labours of the day, that I should spend those hours in study; and from the necessity which I felt to occupy myself with something in accordance to my taste and inclination, my only alternative was to devote some hours of the night to this purpose. From that time I have accustomed myself to study by night; a practice which has since been very advantageous to me. There still remained, however, in my soul, during these nights of study, the most fearful void, which quite embittered my life. Not that I experienced any uneasiness on account of my sins; had it been so, I must have shuddered at the idea of wishing for death; but I lay under the power and curse of sin, without thinking of or seeking for the remedy against it. As I was one day visiting my intimate friend, who was lately married, I met him just as he had received a letter from that celebrated "Professor," with whom he held a literary correspondence. "Shall I," said he to me, " read you his letter, and the admirable verses he has sent me?" "Do so," I replied. They were indeed splendid verses, in which he, with a sanctified power, pourtrayed the glorious prospects and hopes for Israel; they concluded with this appeal--"Oh! my dear friend, become a Christian! I should then end my course with joy." At these words, spoken in a subdued tone, I felt greatly displeased. It appeared to me that my friend was not really sufficiently offended by them. "Take care," said I to him, "they intend to pervert us!" and thereupon I hastily left the room. The whole day, however, I continued absorbed by my meditations and lost in thought.
