Excerpt: ... VII.-THE CALL OF MATTHEW. Luke v. 27-32. Golden Text--"Anew heart will I give you."--Ezekiel xxxvi. 26. If there was a field close by, where you had been allowed to run about and play just as you liked, you would call it your field. Well, by-and-by, there comes a man who takes the field from you, says it is his, and will not let you play upon it unless you pay a penny. He gets men to stand at the gates and gather the money. But instead of asking you for a penny, they make you pay twopence or threepence, keeping all the odd money to themselves. You would say these men were cheats, and you would get to hate them. This was just the way at the time of our story. Palestine was the Jews' own land, but the Romans came and took it, and made the Jews pay money or taxes. The men (called Publicans) who gathered these taxes, made the people pay far more than they should have paid, and so they thought them horrid men, and got to hate them. The name of one of these was Levi. Whether he was as greedy as the rest we do not know; but one day, when he was in his place by the roadside gathering the taxes as usual, Jesus came along that way. Very likely Levi had heard about Him and His wonderful works. We are not sure; but this we know, that when Jesus said to him "Follow Me," he rose at once and went after Him,--a changed man. His old heart, with its wicked ways, had been changed into a new heart, full of wishes to do what was right. Jesus is here now. He is saying to you all, " Follow Me." Will you do it? Perhaps you say, " I would, if I only knew how." Well, as we have seen, Levi was a lover of evil, but after Jesus' command, he became a lover of God. Levi would have his old publican name no more, but ever afterwards called himself Matthew, which means a "lover of God." S...
