Excerpt: ... TWO KINDS OF PRAYER INTRODUCTION IN this parable Jesus teaches how to pray and how not to pray. He calls the Pharisee's prayer, praying with himself; his prayer never reaches the ear of God. The publican humbles himself, and is exalted. SCRIPTURE AND he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this pubh'can. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.--Luke 18: 9-14. PRAYER THOU Giver of all good, I thank Thee for this parable on praying, and I ask Thee to forgive me that my prayers are sometimes so faulty. Forbid that I should exalt myself in Thy presence, and help me to come before Thee humbly, confessing my sins. May I dwell much on what Thou givest to me. If I ever speak of the portion of my possessions I give to Thee, may it be with shame that it is so small, compared with what I receive at Thy hands every day of my life. Help me to consecrate myself to Thee, with all that I have. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
