Excerpt: ... TO A LOVER OF TRUTH. LETTER I. Sir, Had you recommended to us democracy, on a ground merely political, I should leave you to be answered by a Politician. But, as you make Scripture the chariot of error, and Christ the patron of sedition, I make no apology for troubling you with my animadversions on your politics. Scripture is the charter of my falvation, Jesus Christ my Saviour, and Chrit tianity my religion. I love my country. I respect my King. Had I no other design than to support the throne, and preserve the country from drinking her own blood, I should be justified in exposing the madness of your politics, and pouring upon them contempt and abhorrence. But I hope to prove, that your politics subvert the Church of Christ, as well as the monarchy of England; and, that in your zeal to overturn monarchy, you convert the spiritual kingdom of Jesus Christ into a kingdom of this world. You open your pamphlet with the exhibition of two pair of political gladiators. Your youthful champion, armed with his Bible, triumph in his eyes, degrading the heaven appointed Samuel into a democratic judge, and expatiating on the dis fraceful origin of Jewish kings, is a spirited performance. t may be considered both as an emblematic frontispiece to your politics, and as a striking portrait of a Lover of Truth. We have multum in parvo--your pamphlet in the first page. As these champions claimed Scripture for their political creeds, you determined to inquire, What was the doctrine of Scripture on the subject.
