II CHAPTER III. tUL U34GC Vj CrfHODORK HOPKINS--ORDERED TO THE SLOOP PROVIDENCE APPEAL o ',HE MARINE COMMITTEE--GIVEN COMMAND OP THE FLEET TO PROCEED aOJTH--HOPKINS THWARTS THE SCHEME--APPEAL TO CONGRESS AND JCUP.NEY TO PHILADELPHIA ORDERED TO SAIL TO FRANCETAKES COMMAND OF THE BANGERS--GOES TO FRANCE--OBTAINS A FIRST SALUTE TO THE AMERICAN FLAG---DARING EXPEDITION TO THE NORTH UPON THE ENGLISH COAST. It would naturally be supposed such a series of unexampled services must claim a corresponding acknowledgment of preferment; but not so, in Jones's case, at least. Instead of preferment, he was sent back lo the single command of the sloop Providence, by orders from Commodore Hopkins (January 14th, 1777), while Capt. Hinman, his junior by two, on the regulated list, was given command of the Alfred. The 8OU of the ardent Scotchman was fired with indignation at such usage, and he resolutely remonstrated agauist the outrage, after the proofs he had given of his fitness for more responsible command. It is evident that his strongly-marked idiosyncracies, as well as the successful results of his operations, rendered him unpopular with his fellow-officers, who heartily haled his " Scotch arrogance," and feared or envied his ability. In consequence, several of them undoubtedly were plotting against his advancement and his honorable fame. But, as treason is no treason in event of success, so Paul Jones was impermeable to the malice and envy of his mates in the service, owing to the splendor of his achievements. His remonstrance, laid before the marine committee, aided by his friend Mr. Hewes (then a member of the committee), had the effect to obtain for him--the commission dated February 5th, 1777--command of a fleet to be composed of the Alfred, ...
